Kara Gildea, photo journalist https://www.karagildea.com// published the following photograph and interview in 2023 while still attending school in Rochester, NY. She has since graduated with a BFA from RIT. Kara has been sharing her home with Goose, a Maine Coon from Cumbrescoons.

“A lot of people who got kittens from my recent litter already have cats from me,” says Rhonda Wenrich, 71,  owner of Cumbrescoons, a Maine Coon Cattery she has run out of her home in Coudersport, PA {began in Colorado in 2000} since 2014. Before being approached by a friend with an opportunity to breed her first Maine Coon, Wenrich led a career as a nurse for 20 years, “It helps me have a better understanding of the health issues that may arise when a litter is born and be aware of things like nutrition, how to give injections, and the safety issues surrounding medications when taking care of my cats.”

When deciding which cats of hers to breed, Wenrich prioritizes pedigree and expected personality traits, sometimes tracing her cat's ancestry back at least five generations, to ensure cats will remain healthy for their owners over the course of their entire life, rather than breeding for a certain coat color or pattern.

In recent years, Wenrich averages sending 16 kittens from her four female Maine Coons, known as Queens, to new homes annually. She regularly receives cards, gifts, and pictures from her kittens’ families, “it's not the gifts that count, though, it's knowing you’re in someone's thoughts and having had a positive effect on their family that’s important to me.”

At Cumbrescoons, our passion for cats goes beyond breeding and caring for them; it's a commitment to shaping a community where felines are revered, cherished, and provided with the best possible care. As we proudly display these accolades, we renew our pledge to uphold the highest standards of feline welfare and continue to champion excellence in every aspect of our cattery.

Join us as we celebrate these remarkable achievements and look forward to a future filled with more opportunities to enrich the lives of cats and their human companions.

PENNSYLVANIA WILDS

The first Maine Coon I ever met was in Waterville, Maine in the early 1970s. This large docile girl was a beautiful, treasured family pet. Her greatest challenge in life seemed to be finding the sunniest windowsill to lay on, moving from one windowsill to the next as the day waned on. A highly social cat, she would eagerly play with anyone who would stop to visit her, and she greeted the children at the door when they came home from school with chirps and head-butts.
Maine Coon Cats are a very special breed of cat.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Cumbrescoons is a closed cattery, I do not take in studs or females for breeding purposes only.

The cattery name of Cumbrescoons reflects the Spanish atmosphere of the San Luis Valley in Colorado. This is where I first began the Cattery in 2000. "Cumbres" translates into English as "the peak, the pinnacle, the topmost point." What a goal to strive towards! I had worked on the Cumbres-Toltec railroad, a narrow gauge train in the mountains nearby, and always enjoyed the trip.

The cats and kittens are in the house with me, and this helps greatly with their socialization. They learn to play, explore, and feel comfortable with all our friends and visitors.

The kittens are super friendly and confident in their new homes.
