The first Maine Coon I ever met was in Waterville, Maine in the early 1970s. This large docile girl was a beautiful, treasured family pet. Her greatest challenge in life seemed to be finding the sunniest windowsill to lay on, moving from one windowsill to the next as the day waned on. A highly social cat, she would eagerly play with anyone who would stop to visit her, and she greeted the children at the door when they came home from school with chirps and head-butts.
Many years later I shared my home for almost 14 years with Bear. He was a domestic longhair solid blue fantastical cat. Several months after he traveled to the Rainbow Bridge, I decided to research the Maine Coon Breed.
